Lessons from Demi Moore, Demi Lovato & Other Celebrities with Eating Disorders, Treatment & Recovery

Recently celebrities in treatment for eating disorders have been in the news. Demi Moore made headlines with her dramatic weight loss and quest to seek treatment for her eating disorder.  The images of her gaunt body caused concern not only from her family, but from an entire nation of fans who adore her.  While it was just announced that Demi went to treatment, clearly she has been battling an eating disorder for years.
Demi has made headlines in the past for following several restrictive diets such as the Master Cleans Diet, Carbohydrate Addicts Diet, the Raw Food Diet, and the Zone Diet.  After her recent graduation from treatment, it is said that she is in a much better place and that she is eager to get back to work.
Two years ago Demi Lovato put her career on hold while she was touring with the Jonas Brothers to seek treatment.  She stated that she was not eating and she was purging. Demi admits that she started binging when she was 8 years old.  At the age of 12 she was taunted at school and then stopped eating. Demi has publically discussed her personal battle and recovery since leaving treatment last year. She has become an important role model in the fight against eating disorders. Lovato publically advocated recovery and a healthier lifestyle and recently has collaborated with the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) in their National Eating Disorder Awareness Week efforts. Demi is focused on spreading her message awareness all over the world and is utilizing Twitter to share messages to her 6 million followers about the disease.
Celebrities struggle with eating disorders at an alarming rate.
The entertainment industry places intense pressures on the famous to be thin. There have been many celebrities with eating disorders including Snooki, Princess Diana, Kate Moss, Justine Bateman, Portia de Rossi, Calista Flockheart, Lady Gaga, Jane Fonda, Tracey Gold, Joan Rivers, and Mary Kate Olsen just to name a few. Sadly, eating disorders have even taking the lives of celebrities at an early age.  Karen Carpenter was 32 when she died of cardiac arrest due to anorexia. Isabella Caro, a French model, died at the age of 28 from complications from anorexia.
The lessons we can learn from celebrities with eating disorders focuses on awareness.
Last Year, Tracey Gold participated in eating disorder awareness week by speaking to a group of university students about overcoming the grip of eating disorders. Tracey played Carol Seaver on the TV show, “Growing Pains.”  She developed issues with eating at age 11, but fat jokes in scripts and requests from the producers for her to lose weight significantly contributed to her struggle with anorexia. Gold indicated that one of the problems with her battle is that she didn’t recognize that she was suffering from the disease.  Tracey has written a book and continues to advocate awareness so others can begin the process of recovery from eating disorders.
Jamie-Lynn Sigler of the TV show, The Soprano’s, has commented on how the eating disorder overtook her life because she was avoiding activities that might involve food.   Jamie-Lynn has learned different ways to deal with eating disorder struggles and has also been eating disorder awareness week. She runs the Jamie-Lynn Siegler Foundation whose mission is “to promote the development of healthy body images in young women and men and to educate the public about the prevention and serious consequences of eating disorders.
